I sadly made this same mistake redoing my bathroom and had to spend an all nighter removing old drywall and putting up cement backer board.
How to remove old tile from bathroom walls.
Messy back breaking work.
Work slowly and at about a 45 degree angle.
If the toilet or a pedestal sink is covering the tile turn off the shutoff valve on the water supply line.
Our shower room needs revamping.
Chip the grout along the grout lines use a ball peen or masonry hammer and cold chisel to tap the pieces free.
7 remove each tile in turn working.
Always wear safety glasses when removing ceramic tile.
Pry the piece of tile up gently and slowly until it separates from the wall with ease.
Cut away the grout surrounding the tile or tiles that you want to remove.
Flush the toilet until the tank and bowl are both dry finishing the job with a hand operated pump then a sponge.
Be careful to cut away only the grout and not into the wall.
Tap the handle of the tool with a hammer until the tile comes away from the wall.
In some cases the only way to tear out the ceramic tile is with heavy equipment such as a jackhammer or air chisel.
Again do not pry away aggressively to prevent damage to the plaster.
Once those tiles loosen pry them off.

Your demo was so neat and tamed.
And i don t care what any one says demo sucks.
Tiles installed with thinset or another tile adhesive often require more work to remove them.
You may need to pry it off in two or three places if firmly attached.
When you believe you have removed or cut away most of the grout stop and examine your work.
Give it a try by inserting a chisel putty knife or other flat tool in between the tile and the wall almost parallel to the wall.
A wide blade putty knife is helpful in prying the tiles loose.
